SAS software is used for statistical analysis and reporting. This class introduces programming in SAS Version 9.4.

Banner Users - This course is probably NOT for you. Enterprise Guide, Web Report Studio, and integration of SAS with Banner will NOT be covered in this class.

Learning Objectives:

  • Navigate the SAS Windows interface
  • Create a SAS DATA step
  • Create SAS tables (data sets)
  • Read raw data using List Input
  • Learn SAS command syntax rules
  • Understand SAS steps and step boundaries
  • Learn SAS variable and table naming rules
  • Use basic SAS procedures
  • Use help within SAS

This course does not cover any statistical procedures or interpretation of statistical results.

"The Little SAS Book: A Primer" is used as an occasional reference during this course. Several copies will be provided for use in class but cannot be removed from the classroom. It is also available for free online viewing at Safari Books Online (sign in with your VCU email address and password).

This course is taught in a computer classroom on Windows PCs with SAS 9.4 installed. Although classroom PCs are provided, students are welcome to instead bring and use laptops that have SAS installed. Most of the material covered is also applicable to SAS on LINUX/UNIX.

Prerequisites:

Basic/working knowledge of Microsoft Windows.

Due to licensing restrictions, only VCU students, faculty, and staff may attend this class. VCU Medical Center employees are ineligible to attend this class.
