The Animal Care and Use Program (ACUP) is facilitating a small workshop entitled "Aseptic Techniques (no live animals) - Animal and Surgeon Prep, Instruments, and Sterile Field Principles". This class is intended to introduce the concept of sterile surgical fields and maintaining asepsis during basic surgical procedures regardless of the species. In the absence of live animals, participants will learn gloving technique, animal prepping, draping and sterilization techniques. Participants are welcome to bring expired surgical supplies to supplement the class. New Investigators and laboratory personnel (technicians, students, post-docs) with no or minimal surgical experience will benefit from this short course. Since space is limited (3 people/class), people listed on the current protocols will be enrolled first. Participants will receive a certificate at the completion of the class. Class instruction is provided by Dr. Krista Scoggins, Clinical Veterinarian with the Division of Animal Resources (DAR) at VCU. Dr. Scoggins practiced Small Animal and Exotic Animal Medicine and Surgery for 10 years prior to joining VCU in 2000. (This is not a veterinary observation class, please contact DAR if you are in need of a veterinary observation for a surgical procedure in your lab.)
