Course Description:

IBM SPSS Statictics software is used for statistical analysis and reporting. This is an online equivalent of the material covered in the VCU Technology Services SPSS Level 2 Short Course.

Learning Objectives:

  • Produce summary statistics for categorical and scale variables
  • Create and edit charts
  • Customize SPSS output using the SPSS Output Viewer and SPSS Pivot Table Editor
  • Export SPSS output to MS Office applications and in HTML and PDF formats
  • Work with SPSS syntax commands
  • Sort and select cases

The SPSS Tutorial:

Except for editing charts and sorting/selecting cases (but see the note below), you can study all of the above topics online via the SPSS Tutorial, which is available within the SPSS software program.

To access the tutorial:

  1. If you need to obtain the SPSS software, please visit obtain SPSS.
  2. Launch the SPSS program.
  3. From the SPSS menus, select Help / Topics. This will launch the SPSS Help System in your web browser.
  4. Within the Help system screen, open (click) the Table of Contents on the left side of the screen, then scroll down to the Tutorial item and open it. In the tutorial, proceed through (only) the following sections:
    • Examining Summary Statistics for Individual Variables
    • Crosstabulation Tables
    • Creating and Editing Charts
    • Working with Output
    • Working with Syntax

If you have SPSS installed, the data files used in these tutorial exercises are on your computer, located in the Samples/English folder that is within your SPSS installation folder. For example:

In Windows: C:\Program Files\IBM\SPSS\Statistics\26\Samples\English

On the Mac: /Applications/IBM/SPSS/Statistics/26/Samples/English

Note: For help with editing charts, sorting cases, and selecting cases, launch SPSS and, from the Help menu, select Topics. In the resulting Help screen, display the following topics, listed in the Table of Contents on the left side of the screen:
